A Century together

1923

In the basement of a two story detached house on 19th Xenokratous street, Grandfather Kostas Filippou opened a barrel winery, where also ice and coal could be bought.

1935

It gained a Golden award for the production of barrel wine.

1936

The sale of wine began to be accompanied by delicacies – mezedakia that his wife made.

1950

Kostas Filippou son Giannis took over the restaurant.

1968

The detached two story house was replaced by the building where the restaurant still stands today on the ground floor.

1995

Third generation took over, represented by grandson Kostas and his wife Patricia.

“Filippou restaurant with an open kitchen since 1968 (pioneering for that era), symbolizes honesty and trust in what we have been creating everyday over the years. The restaurant is a timeless hangout of many famous and not, from artistic, political and business sectors, people who have left a mark in Modern Greek history.”

Greek Tastes

“The cuisine of Greece was shaped by the customs and traditions of every region. Every event of Greek life is connected to a dining table. In sorrows and joy, all tribulations, we all come together. Families, relatives and friends enjoy the traditional Greek recipes that have been preserved and handed down from grandparents in their purest and cleanest form, maintaining the deliciousness of each meal and also benefiting from the use of the finest ingredients. The cheese pie, spinach pie, stuffed tomatoes and peppers, Greek bean soup, Pastitsio, Mousaka, Lamb fricassee and many other well-known dishes will be found in our restaurant, which we carry on from generation to generation.”

"My favorite restaurant in Athens"

I love this restaurant. It is a local's delight. The food is authentic Greek fare and the prices are very reasonable. I try to come to this restaurant every time I visit Athens. Try the veal with rice or fries. All of their fish is fresh and delicious.

“Traditional Greek food with excellent quality”

Magnus_Solna ( Solna, Sweden )
Great food. We had spinach and squid, fava beans, sardines, fried calamari and se Greek salad. We could look at he food in the kitchen and choose.
This place has no sign and you almost miss it if you don't know where it is.

“Love This Restaurant ”

BeeMelissa ( Portland, Maine )
Tucked away in the upper area of Kolonaki, Filippou restaurant is quaint, cool, and the Greek cuisine is some of the best I have ever tasted. The freshest salads, great soups, pastitsio, mousaka, patates tiganites, chicken, beef, veggies, and desserts. Filippou's has been around a very long time and has gone through several iterations...but it is still a wonderful restaurant with meals prepared with fresh ingredients and from sctatch...it is a delightful respite away from the crowds of Plaka and Monasteraki.
